Minibar is a charming, intimate restaurant that’s best discovered on foot. There’s no need for reservations – just walk in and prepare to be delighted. The staff radiates warmth and happiness, evident in both the drinks and the dishes they serve. It’s truly an experience not to be missed!
A Little Bit of Mystery
Back in April, I stumbled upon Minibar with little more than a Instagram account hinting at a trendy spot specializing in natural wines – the kind that makes foodies swoon. It was either a hidden gem or a pretentious, overpriced trap. But it was open on Monday and Sunday evenings, so I decided to give it a shot.
A Casual and Welcoming Atmosphere
There are no reservations at Minibar – you come as you are! Despite the low-key reputation, the bar was already buzzing with guests, mostly Anglo-Saxons. The setting is cozy and inviting, featuring a beautiful bar counter surrounded by high tables and stools. Exposed stone walls, gorgeous tiles, and the inviting bar counter beckon you to lean in and enjoy the ambiance.
A Taste of the Unexpected
The menu is handwritten on a small card, showcasing a selection of tapas ranging from €7 to €13. The word choices are intriguing: poutargue, eel, black garlic, crème fraiche… anticipation builds!
A Symphony of Flavors
I began with the white asparagus, crème fraiche, and mussels. The seasonal ingredients were top-notch, perfectly seasoned with a subtle touch. At €13, it was a steal!
To accompany the dish, I opted for a glass of Clos Tue-Boeuf. A perfect match!
A Playful and Delicious Tartare
The veal tartare with black garlic, celery, and apples arrived in a unique presentation. The celery served as a taco shell, cradling a fine brunoise of meat and apples. The black garlic perfectly enhanced this delectable dish, where the veal shines both in taste and texture. A culinary masterpiece at €11.
I continued my journey through the wine list with a glass of Vivant at Souvi by Lori Haon.
A Burst of Freshness
Next came a refreshing and flavorful dish: mackerel, salsa verde, homemade ricotta, and fennel. A playful balance of acidity and richness – it was both lively and exciting! The chef, Matt Hiltemann, managed to create these culinary wonders with minimal equipment. For €12, this was a real treat!
A Burgundy Chardonnay from Domaine de la Pierre Levée, Domaine Thalie, accompanied the dish beautifully.
A Beautiful and Delicious Blood Cake
Years ago, this blood cake with eel, leek, and egg yolk would have been deemed too visually appealing, perfect for magazines and cookbooks. Today, its Instagrammability is a given. But is it delicious? With smoked eel, I had high hopes, and they were not disappointed. It was a delightful explosion of flavors. The perfectly set yolk drizzled over the cake, enriching the flavors. The buckwheat crepe added a delicious earthiness, creating a harmonious balance of flavors. It was refined, delicious, and truly a delight!
This time, I ventured outside of France with a glass of Alt Penedes. Another excellent choice!
A Tender and Satisfying Finale
My voracious appetite was still craving more, especially with such delectable dishes. The poached chicken supreme with potato purée and XO sauce was the perfect ending. The chicken was incredibly juicy, the purée light yet indulgent, and the XO sauce exceptional. Another masterpiece for €12!
After a complimentary digestif, the bill arrived, a pleasant surprise at €89 (five dishes and five glasses, with one glass complimentary). Minibar excels in both drinks and food. The reasonable prices, impactful flavors, and charming service make this restaurant a true gem!
Closed for lunch and on Tuesdays and Wednesdays.
