This spring, Saint-Germain-des-Prés became my little haven in Paris. I’ve always dreamed of experiencing Paris in April, and my Airbnb was perfectly positioned to fulfill that dream. It was nestled near the hidden Square Roger-Stéphane, a peaceful sanctuary amidst the Parisian bustle. Just follow rue Récamier, a charming pedestrian street, off of rue de Sèvres to discover this tranquil oasis. It was my perfect escape to unwind and plan my adventures for the next day.
A Secret Garden in the City
Surrounded by towering apartment buildings, this secluded square was almost as serene as the courtyard of my apartment. The quiet atmosphere, filled with the sweet sounds of birdsong, was a delightful contrast to the vibrant streets beyond. It felt like a secret garden tucked away in the heart of the city.
A Stroll Through History and Delight
My explorations led me to the Hôtel de Bérulle on rue de Sèvres, a beautiful neo-classical building dating back to the late 18th century. Although the doors remained closed, the exterior alone hinted at the elegant history housed within. Its facade, with its delicate details and grand presence, transported me back in time.
Just a short walk down rue de Sèvres brought me to Barthélémy, a fromagerie that felt like a treasure trove of cheeses. There were more varieties than space for customers, making it a cheese lover’s paradise. Drawn by an irresistible curiosity, I peeked inside and found myself face to face with a cheese that stole my heart: a goat cheese shaped like a fig and filled with fig confiture. It was a creamy, delicious masterpiece, just steps away from my apartment.
Urban Oases and Artistic Gems
My walk continued along rue Grenelle where I stumbled upon Beau Passage, an intriguing blend of modern and nature. This covered passageway, unlike the historic arcades I’d visited before, was a vibrant fusion of shops, restaurants, and apartments. Its woodland theme, with its three distinct entry points, added a touch of whimsy to the urban landscape. The mural on the wall, a vibrant tapestry of tropical foliage, was a captivating sight. A delicate “flower” in the mural, with its intricate details, caught my eye and added a touch of artistry to the scene.
The Sweet Allure of Parisian Delights
Turning onto rue du Bac, I encountered the tempting aroma of Boissièr: Maître Confiseur. Its window displayed an exquisite array of chocolates, and I couldn’t resist succumbing to their allure. The richness and artistry of the chocolates were a testament to the skill of the confectioner.
My journey led me to Des Gâteaux et du Pain, a charming patisserie on rue du Bac that also offered delicious bread and croissants. I couldn’t resist buying a croissant for a delightful afternoon snack and a baguette to enjoy with the goat cheese I’d purchased at Barthélémy. The aroma of freshly baked goods filled the air, a tantalizing reminder of Parisian culinary delights.
Of course, no trip to Paris is complete without a visit to Angelina Paris, a legendary patisserie just a few doors down. Its elegance and exquisite pastries are a testament to Parisian chic.
Art and History: A Lasting Impression
As I walked towards the metro, a grand sculpture on rue de Sèvres, near the intersection with rue Cherche-Midi and rue du Dragon, caught my attention. This towering metal sculpture, nearly 5 meters high, is a tribute to Pablo Picasso by renowned sculptor César Baldaccini. Its imposing presence was a reminder of the rich artistic heritage of Paris.
My springtime adventure in Saint-Germain-des-Prés was a whirlwind of discoveries, a blend of history, art, and culinary delights. It was a visit that will forever hold a special place in my heart, even as I remember the heartbreaking events that followed. The fire at Notre-Dame, though a tragedy, serves as a reminder of the resilience of the human spirit, and the enduring beauty of Paris, a city that continues to inspire and captivate.
