It’s impossible to browse even a single blog post about Marrakech’s dining scene without encountering NOMAD. This trendy establishment is the go-to spot for the city’s fashionable crowd, offering a welcome escape from the bustling souks and the main square. It’s easy to see why NOMAD is so popular – it boasts a breathtaking rooftop terrace and a menu that cleverly blends modern interpretations with traditional Moroccan cuisine.
A Taste of Morocco with a Modern Twist
Our evening began with a refreshing bottle of mineral water (a reminder that despite the cool, cocktail lounge vibe, we were still in a Muslim country). While we perused the menu, we were treated to a couple of complimentary appetizers: spicy chickpeas and popcorn seasoned with ras el hanout. We opted to share the vegetarian pastille, having enjoyed the traditional pigeon-filled version a few nights prior. This version was packed with fragrant vegetables, goat cheese, and tomato confit.
The pastille was flavorful, and the fresh spinach was a welcome change after days of soft-cooked vegetables. However, it lacked the addictive aftertaste of the sweet and cinnamon-infused pigeon pastille. But let’s be honest, anything deep-fried with sweet peppers and cheese is bound to be a delicious choice.
A Feast for the Senses
For our main course, we chose the lamb tagine and the Agadir calamari. The lamb was incredibly tender, falling apart at the slightest touch, and the prunes were plump and sweet, having absorbed the rich cooking sauce. The buttery farro, a surprising accompaniment, held its own on the plate, offering a satisfying bite without being overly sticky.
The calamari, while seemingly a smaller portion, was served with a zesty anchovy, harissa and ginger sauce and topped with braised fennel. My husband’s beaming smile confirmed its deliciousness, though he might have wished for a slightly larger portion, especially for a growing man.
Rooftop Dining with a View
While we debated over dessert, we soaked in the panoramic views of the city’s spice market. We were overjoyed to have secured a coveted terrace seat, watching other groups settle for the downstairs dining room, which, while pleasant, lacked the same ambiance.
Sweet Temptations
For dessert, I opted for the saffron-scented Moroccan date cake with whipped cream and salted caramel sauce. It wasn’t until after placing my order that I realized it was basically another version of my beloved sticky toffee pudding. Oh well, it’s hard to resist such tempting treats!
This date cake had a lovely pinkish hue, chunkier pieces of dates throughout, and a less sickly sweetness than my usual choice, perhaps thanks to the saffron.
The flourless cardamom ginger and orange cake was a revelation – light and crumbly yet moist and zesty.
A Chic and Relaxed Experience
Service was prompt and friendly, the atmosphere was relaxed and stylish, and the food was some of the best we encountered in the entire city. But don’t expect to find a diverse cross-section of Marrakech society here – NOMAD is primarily frequented by tourists and well-heeled expats.
