The Consulate is a restaurant that embodies elegance, from the moment you step inside. Imagine a bustling Midtown street, filled with honking cars and overflowing trash cans. But then, you enter a haven of golden walls, shimmering chandeliers, and the soft murmur of café music. It’s a complete transformation, a world away from the city’s frenetic energy.
Stepping into a World of Luxury
As you enter, you’re greeted by a warm, inviting atmosphere. The scent of hot towels, freshly pressed suits, and a touch of old-world charm create a luxurious experience. You immediately feel pampered and transported. I’m not kidding, the entire ambiance is an escape from the ordinary!
Beverages at the Consulate
Our waiter, Javier, was a picture of impeccable service. He offered us a selection of handcrafted cocktails, each a symphony of flavor. I chose The Booze & Blues, a smoky and nutty blend of cognac, coffee liquor, and walnut bitters. The cherries, a touch of sweetness, added a delightful complexity to the already rich cocktail.
My dining companion, however, had a less than perfect experience with The Consulate Old Fashioned. The taste of diesel and burnt rubber overwhelmed the other flavors. We politely requested a replacement, and Javier graciously brought a refreshing mojito.
Exquisite Cuisine
The appetizers arrived, a testament to the culinary artistry of the chef. The crab cake, a symphony of lump crab, lime coleslaw, and sriracha mayonnaise, was a masterpiece of simplicity.
But the bone marrow toast was a true revelation. The toast, generously slathered with meat butter and topped with port fig jam, was a symphony of textures and flavors. We couldn’t resist asking for more!
The Star of the Show – Potatoes Au Gratin
My steakfrites, while delicious, were overshadowed by my companion’s beef short rib with chimichurri and crispy smashed potatoes. The potatoes were a masterpiece, deep-fried to a crisp, and bursting with flavor.
But then came the potatoes au gratin – a revelation! This side dish, crispy on top, with a creamy center, stole the show. It was a testament to the chef’s culinary skill.
A Sweet Finale
Finally, the desserts arrived. The apple cinnamon tart was a symphony of sweetness and tartness. My companion devoured it in record time.
I opted for the pineapple upside-down cake with mango orange sorbet, a refreshingly zingy treat after the rich flavors of the meal.
