A Master of Luxury: Jean-Philippe Nuel

Jean-Philippe Nuel, a renowned French architect and designer, views luxury as a beautiful art form. For two decades, he’s crafted unparalleled experiences at some of the world’s most prestigious five-star hotels and resorts. He effortlessly blends the essence of a city’s character and aesthetics into his designs, creating truly unique spaces.

Nuel’s work spans continents and even oceans. One of his latest masterpieces is a luxurious ship for Ponant Cruises, featuring glamorous, futuristic interiors. This visionary designer’s passion for design was instilled in him from a young age, as he grew up in a family where design was a central theme. He seamlessly combines visual mastery with global experience, crafting spaces that captivate everyone from casual travelers to the world’s elite.

A Glimpse into the Mind of a Master

This week, we delve into the mind of this legendary hotel architect!

Andrew Joseph: What’s your morning routine?

Jean-Philippe Nuel: First, I try to fall back asleep. Then, I wake up anyway! After that, I dedicate 20 minutes to meditation.

Andrew: How do you manage work-life balance?

Jean: Honestly, there’s no real balance. I’m currently on a 3-day vacation and I’m still answering your questions! The upside is that I’m on an island with breathtaking views of the Mediterranean Sea. Hopefully, it will inspire me!

Andrew: What’s your favorite time of day?

Jean: Nighttime, especially if I can see the stars.

Andrew: Who would you want to write your obituary?

Jean: I’m starting to think about that now, so I’m not caught off guard!

Andrew: What’s the most adventurous thing you’ve ever done?

Jean: Exploring a forbidden part of the Parisian catacombs at night. I crawled through tunnels, surrounded by skeletons, and even got lost before finding my way back before morning.

Andrew: If you had one more hour in the day, what would you do with it?

Jean: I’d dedicate it to something I haven’t had time for: reading or rereading a classic of French literature, painting, sailing, or perhaps simply doing nothing at all.

Andrew: What advice would you give your teenage self?

Jean: Advice often solidifies my choices, so I’d tell my younger self:

  • Don’t listen to everyone’s advice.
  • Chase as many dreams as you can, so you can catch at least a few of them.

Andrew: How do you define beauty?

Jean: For me, beauty is feminine and synonymous with elegance, both physical and moral, and always linked to intelligence.
