Paris, the City of Lights, is an enchanting destination any time of year. From blooming cherry blossoms in spring to festive winter celebrations, every season holds unique charm. However, navigating this multifaceted city can feel overwhelming, especially when choosing a place to stay. With so many unique districts, known as arrondissements, each with its own personality, deciding where to lay your head can be a daunting task.
After recently experiencing the Shangri-la Hotel, a Parisian icon, I wanted to share my thoughts and offer an unbiased review. This isn’t a sponsored post – my opinions are entirely my own.
Who Should Stay at the Shangri-la?
The Shangri-la boasts a blend of luxury and charm, making it ideal for some travelers while not quite hitting the mark for others. Let’s dive into who might enjoy this hotel and who might want to explore other options.
First-time visitors to Paris will adore the Shangri-la’s central location, providing easy access to iconic landmarks like the Eiffel Tower and the Louvre Museum. Single travelers with a generous budget will be captivated by the breathtaking views from the terrace rooms, offering a panoramic perspective of the City of Lights.
However, the Shangri-la might not be the perfect fit for families due to its formal atmosphere, which might not be suitable for young children. Budget-conscious travelers should be aware of the hotel’s hefty price tag, as it’s considered a luxury establishment. Seasoned Paris explorers might find the location a bit touristy, as it sits in the heart of the city’s most popular attractions. Long-term stays are also discouraged due to the premium room rates.
A Glimpse into Luxury
As one of the most recognized hotels in Paris, the Shangri-la comes with a hefty price tag, ranging from $800 to $2,000 per night for a standard room. So what makes this hotel worth such a significant investment?
The service at the Shangri-la is nothing short of exceptional. From the impeccable door staff to the personalized check-in experience, every detail is carefully curated to make you feel like a VIP. The staff goes above and beyond to fulfill any special requests, ensuring a truly personalized stay.
Prime Location for First-Timers
While I typically prefer to explore less touristy corners of Paris, the Shangri-la’s location is a dream come true for those experiencing the city for the first time.
Nestled in the heart of Paris, the Shangri-la is within a 15-minute walk of both the Eiffel Tower and the Louvre Museum. Reaching the iconic Sacré-Cœur Basilica in my favorite neighborhood, Montmartre, is a simple 35-minute metro ride. If you’re looking to be close to the city’s main attractions, this hotel ticks all the boxes.
Amenities and Experiences
The Shangri-la doesn’t disappoint when it comes to amenities. While the common areas could benefit from additional views of the Eiffel Tower, the lobby bar, La Botaniste, boasts a fantastic cocktail menu and an elegant vintage ambiance. The spa, gym, and pool are equally impressive, offering a luxurious escape from the hustle and bustle of the city.
Indulgent Breakfast Delights
Prepare to be spoiled by the best room service breakfast you’ve ever encountered. The Shangri-la offers various options, but if you’re feeling extravagant, the Bauhinia Breakfast is a must-try. From a delicious bread basket filled with pastries to a refreshing yogurt and fruit selection, and a perfectly prepared egg dish, this breakfast is truly a feast for the senses. It’s the perfect way to start your day, whether you’re sharing with your partner or indulging in a solo treat.
A Few Shortcomings
While the Shangri-la offers a fantastic location for first-time visitors, it falls short in a few key areas. The lack of a roof terrace with Eiffel Tower views is surprising given the hotel’s price point and the popularity of rooftop experiences in Paris. Guests often have priority access to rooftop dining, and reservations book up weeks in advance.
This omission was particularly disappointing given my choice of a basic room without a view. While the hotel website showcases a rooftop terrace, it was unavailable during my stay. If this feature is important to you, it’s wise to consider alternative accommodations.
The Shangri-la also lacks the unique experiences that elevate many other five-star hotels. While the concierge service can arrange bookings, it lacks the personalized touch found in other luxury establishments.
Room Impressions
The basic rooms at the Shangri-la are beautifully renovated and impeccably clean, featuring classic traditional décor. The bathroom is a luxurious retreat with a luxurious bathtub and high-end Guerlain toiletries. However, at over $1,000 per night, I expected a bit more from a basic room, especially the lackluster view. My room overlooked a concrete wall, which wasn’t exactly ideal for a Parisian getaway.
For a truly memorable experience, consider the terrace Eiffel rooms, offering breathtaking views of the Eiffel Tower. If you’re celebrating a special occasion, the La Suite Gustave Eiffel is the ultimate indulgence, boasting a private terrace with panoramic views.
Tips for Your Shangri-la Stay
Whether you decide to make the Shangri-la your Parisian haven, here are a few tips to make the most of your stay:
Transportation: Depending on your arrival point, Uber or a taxi might be the most convenient way to reach the hotel. Alternatively, a 30-minute metro ride from Gare du Nord offers an adventurous option.
Booking: To maximize travel rewards and benefits, consider booking through your credit card travel partners. American Express offers excellent perks for premium hotels and resorts, such as early check-in, room upgrades, dining credits, and late check-out. If you don’t have a travel credit card, booking directly through the hotel allows access to special packages and rates.
Special Requests: The Shangri-la staff is renowned for their responsiveness. If you have any special requests, such as early check-in or specific items in your room, contact the hotel ahead of time to ensure a seamless arrival.
Paris awaits, and the Shangri-la offers a luxurious gateway to the City of Lights. While it might not be the perfect fit for everyone, it’s a remarkable choice for those seeking a blend of elegance, convenience, and exceptional service.
