This month, we’re celebrating a decade of love! To mark this special occasion, we’re diving headfirst into the City of Lights, Paris, with a list of our top ten must-do (or not) experiences.
We’ve tapped into the knowledge of our in-house Parisian expert, Milene, to give us the inside scoop on her home city.
Whether it’s your first Parisian adventure or your umpteenth return, the City of Love has something for everyone. From iconic landmarks and world-class museums to chic shopping, charming cafes, and gastronomic delights, Paris is a treasure trove of experiences. But with so much on offer, it can be overwhelming. That’s why having a local’s guide is a lifesaver!
First Impressions and Navigating Paris
Let’s face it, arriving in a new city can be daunting, especially if you’re unfamiliar with the public transportation system. If you’re arriving at Gare du Nord by Eurostar and are new to Paris, consider taking a taxi to your hotel.
The Parisian metro can be tricky to navigate, particularly with luggage in tow, and it’s unfortunately a hot spot for pickpockets.
Embracing the ‘Marais’ Charm
For a taste of Parisian life, head to the ‘Le Marais’ quarter. This vibrant and diverse neighborhood is like the Soho of Paris, packed with trendy boutiques, art galleries, and buzzing bars and restaurants.
Don’t miss Rue des Rosiers, a bustling street with trendy boutiques and the best falafel in Paris. It’s a feast for the senses!
Finding Peace in ‘Le Marais’
After exploring the lively streets, find tranquility in ‘La Place des Vosges’. This charming square, surrounded by beautiful art galleries, is one of Milene’s favorite spots for a relaxing picnic with friends. It’s a hidden oasis of calm in the heart of the bustling ‘Marais’.
Discovering the Seine’s Beauty
Embrace the romance of the City of Lights by strolling along the banks of the Seine, near the St-Michel quarter. Enjoy the stunning views of Notre-Dame and take a leisurely walk across Saint-Michel Bridge.
For a touch of glamour, consider a Seine river cruise on a Parisian ‘bateau mouche’.
Indulging in French Gastronomy
Craving a truly authentic Parisian experience? Book a table at ‘Brasserie Flo’ right away! Milene can’t recommend this restaurant enough. It offers delicious traditional French cuisine in a stunning 19th-century setting. And don’t forget to try the legendary profiteroles – they’re out of this world!
Exploring Paris’ Underground Secrets
For a glimpse into Paris’ history, head to ‘Les Catacombes’. This underground ossuary is an eerie but fascinating experience. Located 60 meters below the ground, this illuminated labyrinth is lined with millions of skulls and bones, telling the story of the city’s oldest cemetery.
Ascending to Montmartre’s Heights
Escape to Montmartre, a charming village nestled at the highest point in Paris after the Eiffel Tower.
For a romantic evening, visit ‘La Basilique du Sacre Coeur’ at dusk and soak in the breathtaking panoramic views of the city. Top off the evening with ‘Crepe Suzettes’ on the terrace of a charming cafe/restaurant.
Navigating the Parisian Labyrinth
Don’t be intimidated by Parisian stereotypes! While they have a reputation for being grumpy and unhelpful, they’re more likely to help you find your way if you try your French or at least make an effort.
“Excusez-moi, je suis perdue. Pourvez-vous m’aider? Je cherche le Boulevard Haussman…” (Excuse me, I’m lost. Can you help me? I’m looking for Boulevard Haussman…)
A Trip to Versailles
For a taste of history and grandeur, take a short train trip to Versailles. Just 20 minutes from Paris, this epitome of French elegance is home to the famous ‘Gallerie des Glaces’, a masterpiece of opulent design.
Don’t miss the Queen’s garden estate, inspired by the Queen of Fashion, Marie Antoinette. This idyllic spot will transport you back to a bygone era.
Indulging Your Sweet Tooth
End your Parisian adventure with a delightful treat. Indulge in the most delectable macarons in Paris. Head to their Parisian tearoom on the Champs-Élysées and experience the Art of French Living.
From charming cafes to iconic landmarks, Paris has a little something for everyone. So, come celebrate a decade of love with us and embrace the magic of the City of Lights!
