Get ready to be captivated by the Eiffel Tower! From its breathtaking views to its rich history, this iconic monument offers a truly unforgettable experience. But before you embark on your adventure, it’s essential to be aware of some important safety guidelines. This comprehensive guide, based on the Eiffel Tower’s official visitor regulations, will equip you with all the information you need for a safe and pleasurable visit.
(This guide is taken directly from the official Eiffel Tower visit regulations, which you can find here in full. Please read them carefully before your visit.)
Staying Safe and Secure
The Eiffel Tower, like all public facilities in France, has implemented stringent security measures. These measures, reinforced by the national “Vigipirate” plan (currently at the “increased security – risk of attack” level), ensure the safety of all visitors. You will be required to go through two security checkpoints: the first at the entrance to the site and the second before boarding the elevator or stairs to the tower.
For your own safety and the well-being of everyone, please be aware of certain prohibited items:
- Any object that poses a risk to the safety of people, the facilities, or the monument. This includes items like Swiss army knives, which are considered weapons and will not be allowed.
- Our security teams are unable to make exceptions or store prohibited items during your visit.
(Please review Articles 16, 23, 24, and 25 of the visit regulations for more information.)
Planning Your Trip: Luggage, Strollers, and Other Essentials
Don’t let your luggage weigh you down during your Eiffel Tower visit. While you’ll want to make the most of your time in Paris, remember that large luggage is not permitted inside the tower for safety reasons. There are no luggage lockers, storage, or cloakrooms available at the tower. A luggage sizer is available at the security checkpoints to indicate the maximum size allowed. If your luggage exceeds this size, it will not be permitted. Consider arranging for luggage storage at your hotel or at the train station before heading to the Eiffel Tower.
(Refer to Article 16 of the visit regulations.)
Bringing children to the Eiffel Tower? It’s a fantastic experience for everyone, and we’re happy to welcome families! While strollers are welcome, only folding strollers are permitted to avoid obstructing pathways. Non-folding strollers, scooters, and bicycles are prohibited.
Remember to pack roller blades and roller skates in a bag. These items cannot be used during your visit.
(Consult Articles 16 and 18 of the visit regulations for more details.)
Keeping Your Belongings Secure
Never leave your belongings unattended! This may seem obvious, but it’s crucial in today’s security environment. An abandoned bag can trigger a major security response, potentially requiring perimeter lockdown, floor evacuation, and even bomb disposal services. Be mindful of your belongings, and report any lost items to our reception team or the Information Desk in the west pillar on the esplanade.
(For detailed information, refer to Articles 18, 27, 28, 29, and 38 of the visit regulations.)
Photography Tips for Safe and Spectacular Shots
The Eiffel Tower’s views are breathtaking! You’ll be tempted to capture those moments with your smartphone or camera. However, be incredibly cautious! Reaching over railings or gates is extremely dangerous and strictly prohibited. A dropped device could cause serious harm to those below. Parents, please remind your children and teenagers of the importance of this safety rule.
(Refer to Article 18 of the visit regulations.)
Considerations for Visitors with a Fear of Heights
If you have a fear of heights, it’s important to consider your comfort level before ascending to the top of the Eiffel Tower. The climb from the second floor offers a truly extraordinary experience but can be challenging for those with acrophobia.
If you’re unsure, consider purchasing tickets for access to the second floor only. This option provides a thrilling view of Paris while avoiding the higher floors.
