The architect who took over decided to start anew, razing the existing structure. The plans were revised to resemble the grand churches of the era, but the revolution stalled progress. By 1789, only the foundations were complete.
From Napoleon’s Vision to Mary Magdalene’s Sanctuary
With the upheaval of the revolution, the Église de la Madeleine project fell into oblivion. The site was repurposed, serving as a warehouse and even a “Temple to Reason” during the tumultuous period. Even after Napoleon Bonaparte ascended to power, the site remained dormant.
The emperor, however, had a vision for the site. In 1806, Napoleon decreed the construction of a memorial to the Grand Army, inspired by the ancient Greek temples. The site was once again cleared, and a new structure began to rise. However, Napoleon’s reign ended before the project could be completed.
His successor, Louis XVIII, the restoration monarch, decided to dedicate the building to Mary Magdalene. He ordered the church’s completion, and finally, after nearly a century of delays, the Église de la Madeleine was consecrated in 1842.
