A Culinary Journey at the Eiffel Tower: From Gaslights to Gourmet Delights

The Eiffel Tower, a Parisian icon, boasts a rich history that extends beyond its stunning architecture. Its restaurants have evolved over the years, reflecting the city’s culinary and design trends. Let’s embark on a gastronomic journey through time, exploring the unique dining experiences offered at the 58 Tour Eiffel.

From Four to One: A Culinary Evolution

The Eiffel Tower’s culinary scene has undergone a captivating transformation since its grand opening in 1889. Initially, four restaurants graced the first floor, their kitchens tucked beneath, illuminated by gaslights. These early dining establishments offered a glimpse into Parisian cuisine of the late 19th century. However, by the 1937 International Exposition, these four restaurants were replaced with just two. This shift marked the beginning of a new era for dining at the Eiffel Tower.

Then, in the 1980s, during a major renovation, the tower’s restaurants underwent another metamorphosis. The two restaurants, “La Belle France” and “Le Parisien,” were redesigned and established as must-visit Parisian eateries. But the changes didn’t stop there. In 2009, these two were merged into one grand brasserie, the “Altitude 95,” a tribute to its 95-meter elevation. This new establishment was designed by Slavik and Loup, featuring a charming hot air balloon theme, perfectly encapsulating the feeling of soaring above the city.

Chic Picnics and Romantic Evenings

The Eiffel Tower’s culinary journey continues with the 58 Tour Eiffel, a chic brasserie that opened its doors in 2009 after a complete renovation. The redesign, overseen by Patrick Jouin, who also masterminded the interior of the Jules Verne restaurant, imbued the space with a contemporary elegance. The 58 Tour Eiffel embraces a dual personality, seamlessly transitioning from a casual lunch spot to an intimate evening destination.

During the day, a chic picnic-style lunch is served non-stop from 11:30 am to 4:30 pm, with last orders for main courses at 3:45 pm. This unique dining experience involves ordering at the counter and carrying your meal in a basket to your table. The 58 Tour Eiffel’s menu, crafted by Chef Alain Soulard, a former protégé of Alain Ducasse, offers high-quality French cuisine, catering to diverse palates.

In the evening, the 58 Tour Eiffel transforms into a romantic retreat, offering a sophisticated ambiance enhanced by contemporary décor, soft lighting, and minimalistic furniture. The restaurant’s design, a testament to Jouin’s vision, emphasizes the luxurious setting without detracting from the stunning views. Guests are greeted by a hostess upon arrival and ushered to their tables, ready to savor an evening high above the City of Lights.

A Menu for Every Occasion

The 58 Tour Eiffel provides a variety of dining options to suit every taste and occasion. For lunch, a picnic-style menu with either two or three courses is available. The options include tempting choices like Caesar salad, seared bonito tuna, roasted poultry risotto, and delicious desserts like the Crousti Eiffel cake. A dedicated children’s menu ensures that young diners are also treated to delightful meals.

Evening dining at the 58 Tour Eiffel is an experience that calls for reservations. Two seating times are offered, at 6:30 pm and 9 pm. The evening menu showcases the best of French cuisine, with an array of starters like seared tiger prawn, duck foie gras, and main courses such as seared salmon fillet and oven roasted leg of lamb. The “Opera” menu, starting at €70 per person, includes a starter, main course, dessert, and a glass of champagne.

For a truly unforgettable occasion, the “Service Premier,” offered at the 9 pm seating, provides a privileged dining experience. This option includes a tasting menu with an aperitif, starter, two main courses, dessert, mignardises, wine, mineral water, and coffee. With a cost of €135 per person or €155 for window seating, the “Service Premier” elevates dining at the 58 Tour Eiffel to a luxurious level.

More Than Just a Meal

Dining at the 58 Tour Eiffel is not merely about the food; it’s about the experience. The restaurant’s unique location, breathtaking views, and sophisticated ambiance combine to create a truly memorable dining experience.

Whether you’re enjoying a casual lunch or a romantic evening dinner, a visit to the 58 Tour Eiffel offers a taste of Parisian luxury and a culinary journey that will linger in your memory long after you’ve left the City of Lights.

Remember, even for a booked evening meal, you’ll need to purchase tickets to ascend the Eiffel Tower to access the restaurant.
