Computational Modelling and Simulation (M&S) are powerful tools for achieving this goal. However, using M&S for risk-informed decision-making and qualification or certification of aerospace structures requires ensuring their credibility.
This presentation explores a framework for building credible M&S of composite structures for the development and certification of composite aerospace structures. The framework is built on the Verification, Validation, and Uncertainty Quantification (VVUQ) process. By focusing on the structure of interest, the presentation outlines a validation hierarchy, where the structure is broken down into sub-assemblies, parts, and coupons. Each element within this hierarchy serves as a validation case, allowing for increasing credibility as you move towards simulating the full-scale structure. The ultimate goal is to achieve such simulation credibility that expensive full-scale qualification or certification testing can be replaced by simulation.
DIC and DIGITAL TWIN: Towards New Justification Methods
The current justification methods for composite structures used in the aerospace industry rely heavily on experimental validation at various stages of the test pyramid. This approach is often time-consuming and expensive, especially when considering damage tolerance aspects. Additionally, theoretical mechanical analysis often relies on classical elastic approaches and standard or in-house failure criteria determined through elementary tests or empirical data.
This presentation introduces new justification methods that aim to reduce the dependence on extensive experimental validation and optimize the analysis process. These methods include:
- Integrating uncertainty propagations: This approach helps to reduce sizing factors by incorporating uncertainty in material properties and loading conditions.
