Paris, the City of Lights, holds a special place in many hearts, and for me, it’s a yearly pilgrimage. It’s a city that always seems to grow more enchanting with each visit, like a fine wine that improves with age. And just like Paris, Hotel Lutetia, a legendary Parisian landmark, has undergone a remarkable transformation, emerging as a dazzling beacon of luxury and history.
A Historic Gem Reborn
Hotel Lutetia, built in 1910 by the visionary owners of Le Bon Marché department store, has been a symbol of Parisian elegance since its inception. This iconic hotel, nestled in the heart of Saint-Germain-des-Prés, has witnessed the rise and fall of empires, becoming a haven for artists, writers, and dignitaries alike. Josephine Baker, Picasso, Matisse, James Joyce, Hemingway – these are just a few of the names who have graced its halls, adding to its rich tapestry of history.
During World War II, the hotel took on a darker role, serving as headquarters for the German counter-espionage. But following liberation, it became a symbol of hope and resilience, offering shelter to concentration camp survivors and acting as a vital hub for reunions and the search for missing loved ones.
A New Era of Glamour
Today, Hotel Lutetia shines brighter than ever, having emerged from a four-year, $240 million renovation. Its original Art Nouveau/Art Deco charm has been lovingly preserved, enhanced by contemporary touches that create a truly captivating atmosphere.
Natural light floods the hotel, pouring through newly installed skylights and enlarged windows. Gleaming white marble illuminates public areas, reflecting the rich and abundant sunshine that bathes the interior courtyard.
The lobby corridor, bathed in brilliant white, gleams with recessed spotlights, while upper-floor hallways, clad in dark eucalyptus wood, create a soothing, intimate ambiance.
A Haven of Luxury and Comfort
The hotel boasts 184 rooms, including 47 luxurious suites. My stay in a fourth-floor suite was nothing short of heavenly. The most striking feature was the breathtaking view from the balcony windows. Overlooking the flower-filled Square Boucicaut, the Bon Marche department store, and the iconic Eiffel Tower, it was a panorama of Parisian beauty.
The room itself was a study in elegance, decorated in calming shades of white, dark blue, and gray. A large, inviting bed, a marble-topped desk, and plush seating areas created a perfect blend of comfort and style. Welcome gifts of white hydrangeas, Champagne, and delectable pastries added a touch of Parisian indulgence.
The large marble bathroom was a sanctuary of luxury, featuring a separate toilet, shower, and a spacious bathtub perfect for two. Fresh white roses and an array of fragrant Hermès toiletries completed the picture of pure pampering.
Indulgent Delights
Hotel Lutetia offers a wealth of opportunities for indulging in the finer things in life. While the legendary Brasserie, a beloved Parisian institution, is undergoing renovations, guests can savor a magnificent breakfast buffet in the serene and luminous L’Orangerie.
The Saint Germain, a charming living room-like dining area under a glass ceiling, offers a delightful setting for breakfast, lunch, and dinner, adorned with vibrant artwork by Fabrice Hyber.
Bar Joséphine, a tribute to the legendary Josephine Baker, offers a tempting array of choices, from light lunches and canapés to decadent cocktails, including the signature Rive Gauche.
A Symphony of Art and History
Hotel Lutetia is a feast for the senses, captivating guests with its intricate details and elegant design. From the sculpted violin table by artist Arman in the reception area to the countless works of art and decorative elements throughout the hotel, each corner is a testament to the hotel’s rich history and enduring artistry.
An Unforgettable Experience
Hotel Lutetia seamlessly blends history, elegance, and modern comfort, offering a truly unforgettable Parisian experience. Despite its grand stature and the numerous celebrities and dignitaries who have graced its halls, the hotel exudes a down-to-earth, unpretentious charm. As Shakespeare once wrote, “Age cannot wither her, nor custom stale her infinite variety.” This timeless hotel, with its unique blend of history, luxury, and Parisian joie de vivre, continues to captivate and inspire.
This is a hotel that truly makes you feel like you’ve stepped into a Parisian dream, a place that will linger in your memory long after you’ve left.
