Feeling a bit smug, we bypassed the throngs of people waiting for the elevator and joined a smaller queue. We were on our way to a special dinner at the 58 Tour Eiffel restaurant on the first floor of the Eiffel Tower. We envisioned an evening of French wine, exquisite food, and romance. But what if it turned out to be a two-hour ordeal with subpar food, cheap wine, and hordes of tourists?
An Iconic Setting
The iconic wrought iron structure loomed above us, creating a sense of excitement. We joined a throng of eager diners in the exclusive elevator, jostling for a glimpse of Paris and our dining destination. As we approached the restaurant, anticipation (and impatience) grew. The grand double doors swung open with a flourish at precisely 6:30 pm, and we were ushered into the spacious restaurant. The space was divided into two levels, with tour groups segregated from couples and small groups.
A Menu of Options
58 Tour Eiffel offers three pre-booked dinner options, ranging from $118 to $165, with varying prices depending on table location and wine inclusion. We had booked a mid-priced “privileged seating” in the main room, which offered the same Trocadéro view as the most expensive tables, albeit one row back from the window. The restaurant exuded an elegant brasserie vibe against the backdrop of the City of Lights. Minimalist furnishings and soft lighting enhanced the experience and the views.
Precision and Charm
With two two-hour seatings per night, the restaurant operates with military precision. Despite this, our friendly waiter managed to create an illusion of leisurely dining. We had just finished our welcome glass of Champagne when the entrée of spiced king prawns arrived, artfully presented on a colorful bed of avocado, grapefruit, and sweet edible blooms.
Unexpected Delight
The dish surpassed our expectations for a tourist restaurant. The roast herbed guinea fowl breast that followed was quintessentially French and equally impressive, as was my husband’s grilled lamb. There was a welcome pause before the rich chocolate marquise for dessert, giving us time to savor the view and enjoy another glass of wine. We concluded our evening with a trip to the top of the Eiffel Tower, of course.
A Memorable Experience
With food and service exceeding expectations, this iconic dining experience delivered. We had a fantastic time, and we highly recommend a meal at 58 Tour Eiffel.
