Ever dreamt of capturing the magic of Paris through your lens? You’re in the right place! Whether you’re a seasoned photographer or just starting out, Paris offers endless opportunities to capture breathtaking shots. I recently shared my photography tips on The Earful Tower podcast, and there’s been a lot of interest. So, I’ve gathered my best advice and stunning photos for your Parisian photography adventure.
Golden Hour & Blue Hour Magic
The early bird gets the worm, and in Paris, the early bird gets the best light! I adore the soft, warm glow of the sunrise that paints the city in a magical light. It’s the perfect time to capture Paris before the crowds arrive, creating a serene and captivating atmosphere.
But what if early mornings aren’t your thing? Don’t worry, there’s another magical time: sunset and the Blue Hour. The iconic Pont Alexandre III bridge is a sight to behold during this time, bathed in a soft, golden hue.
Pack a picnic, grab a comfy spot on the banks of the Seine, and relax. The Blue Hour, a fleeting moment after sunset, transforms the city with a breathtaking blue glow. It’s a captivating time to photograph, so be sure to be ready!
Exploring Hidden Gems & Unique Perspectives
While Paris has many familiar landmarks, there’s always something new to discover. I love exploring off the beaten path, venturing into hidden corners and discovering fresh perspectives.
One of my favorite finds was the Left Bank. It was a charming change of pace, with delightful restaurants, quaint streets, and unexpected views of the Eiffel Tower. Don’t be afraid to get lost and let the city guide your photography.
Harnessing the Power of Light
Light is EVERYTHING in photography. The soft light of sunrise and the golden hour before sunset is ideal for portraits and capturing the city’s beauty. Avoid the harsh midday sun, which can create harsh shadows and washed-out images.
Cloudy days offer a more even light, perfect for shooting throughout the day. If you’re photographing food, try to find natural light by a window or outdoors.
Your Camera: The Perfect Tool for Capture
Don’t feel pressured to buy an expensive camera. The best camera is the one you have with you. Whether it’s your trusty iPhone or a DSLR, focus on capturing the moment. Embrace natural light and avoid filters.
I’ve been a loyal Canon DSLR user for years, but recently discovered the joy of a compact Fuji camera. It’s light, powerful, and perfect for travel. And, for those who sell their photos, shooting in RAW format is a must.
Breaking the Mold & Creating Your Own Story
Don’t be afraid to break free from the classic shots you see all over Instagram. Get creative! Get closer to your subject or zoom out for a wider view. Change your perspective by shooting from ground level or even standing on a chair.
Remember: Have fun! Experiment with different angles, play with light, and capture the beauty of Paris as you see it.
Back Up Your Memories: Protect Your Precious Photos
One crucial step is to back up your photos at the end of each day. Don’t risk losing your memories! Format your SD cards regularly and never write over them.
I also keep every card as a backup, which is incredibly affordable these days.
Enjoy your Parisian photography adventure and capture the city’s magic!
