Where is Montparnasse in Paris?

Montparnasse sits just south of the renowned St Germain in the 6th arrondissement, and is also close to the 7th arrondissement, both home to many of Paris’ iconic attractions. Imagine Paris’ arrondissements as a snail shell – they are numbered from 1 to 20 in a cyclical order, making the 14th arrondissement a short hop south of the 6th and 7th. This prime location gives you easy access to the city’s most famous landmarks, while providing a welcome respite from the bustling tourist crowds.

Find Your Perfect Stay in Montparnasse

On my last three trips to Paris, I’ve chosen to stay in Montparnasse, and I highly recommend it. The Hotel Raspail Montparnasse is a personal favorite. This charming boutique hotel boasts a fantastic location and offers excellent value for money. I was lucky enough to have a corner room with incredible views – the majestic Eiffel Tower stood proudly in the foreground, while the Sacre Coeur, in the distance, offered a glimpse of another Parisian gem. The view was a highlight of my trip!

Must-See Attractions in Montparnasse

Montparnasse offers a diverse range of attractions to keep you entertained. Here are a few must-see spots:

Take in the City’s Breathtaking Panorama

For the best views of Paris, head to the Tour Montparnasse Observation Deck. This skyscraper, built in 1973, sparked a public uproar when it first appeared, leading to a ban on future skyscraper development to protect the city’s skyline. Though it might not be the most visually pleasing building, its unique position as the only skyscraper in Paris provides unparalleled panoramic views of the city. Capture the Eiffel Tower in all its glory, along with the magnificent dome of the Hotel des Invalides, and experience the magic of Paris both during the day and at sunset.

Delve into the Mysterious Paris Catacombs

Embark on an unforgettable journey into the depths of Paris with a visit to the Catacombs. This labyrinthine network of tunnels, stretching for kilometers beneath the city, houses an awe-inspiring collection of skeletal remains. The Catacombs were created in the late 18th century to address the city’s burgeoning population and the overcrowding in its cemeteries. The remains were transferred to these old quarries, creating a unique and chilling spectacle. Today, the Catacombs offer a glimpse into the city’s history and the lives of those who came before us.

Find Tranquility in Parc Montsouris

Escape the city’s hustle and bustle in the beautiful Parc Montsouris, one of Paris’ four large urban parks. Located next to Cite Universitaire, it’s a popular spot for students, families, and couples alike. Meander along the park’s winding pathways, relax for a picnic, or simply watch the world go by. See families enjoying pony rides, couples enjoying a quiet moment together, and elderly Parisians gracefully feeding the swans gliding on the lake.

Crepe in paris

Indulge in the Flavors of Montparnasse

Montparnasse is a haven for foodies, with a range of culinary experiences to tantalize your taste buds.

Savor the Perfect Crepe

Montparnasse is renowned for its crepe stands, particularly along Boulevard Montparnasse. Although the number has dwindled over the years, you can still find some of the best crepes in Paris here. Creperie Genia, located next to the iconic restaurant La Coupole, is a personal favorite.

Experience the Best Food Market in Paris

If you’re looking for fresh produce and gourmet delicacies, head to Marche Saxe-Breteuil, one of Paris’ best food markets. Situated between Place de Breteuil and Avenue de Segur, it opens every Thursday and Saturday morning, offering a vibrant selection of the finest local products. The market’s stunning backdrop of the Eiffel Tower and Hotel des Invalides adds to its charm.

Dine at Paris’ Legendary Restaurants

Montparnasse is home to some of Paris’ most legendary restaurants, attracting both locals and tourists.

Le Select, an art deco brasserie established in 1925, has stood the test of time, attracting famous patrons such as Ernest Hemingway. With its charming terrace tables, it’s the perfect spot for people-watching and soaking up the atmosphere.

Le Dome, a restaurant with a rich history, has graced the pages of Ernest Hemingway, Edith Piaf, Anais Nin, and Henry Miller’s works. Its opulent interior, elegant ambiance, and beautiful glass-enclosed terrace, perfect for enjoying an aperitif, will transport you back in time.

La Coupole, established in 1927, is a glamorous brasserie known for its seafood and captivating interiors. While a little more touristy, it’s still a Parisian icon.

Le Relais de l’Entrecote, a unique dining experience, offers a set menu of steak frites. The walk-in only policy adds to the thrill, and the shared platter ensures an unforgettable culinary experience.

Enjoy a Nightcap at Charivari

Charivari, a picturesque Parisian bar and terrace, provides the perfect setting for some prime people-watching. Its outdoor tables, clustered together in the classic Parisian style, offer a front-row seat to the vibrant life of Montparnasse. It’s the ideal spot to soak up the atmosphere and experience a slice of Parisian life.
