Welcome to Booking.com, your one-stop shop for finding the perfect vacation spot! But how do we ensure the reviews you read are reliable and helpful? Let’s dive into the world of Booking.com reviews and understand how we keep them fair and accurate.
Review Scores: How We Calculate Them
Each review on Booking.com receives a score between 1 and 10. To get the overall score you see, we add up all the review scores and divide the total by the number of reviews.
In some regions, like Malta, Iceland, Australia, Greece, Brazil, and North Carolina, we’re currently testing a weighted review system. This means more recent reviews have a bigger impact on the overall score. This helps keep the ratings fresh and relevant.
Guests can also give separate ‘subscores’ in important areas like location, cleanliness, staff, comfort, facilities, value for money, and free Wi-Fi. It’s important to note that guests submit their subscores and overall scores independently, so there’s no direct link between them.
Reviews: Submission, Editing, and Authenticity
You can write a review if you stayed at a property you booked through our platform, or even if you arrived but didn’t end up staying. To edit a review you’ve already submitted, simply contact our Customer Service team.
We have dedicated teams and automated systems that hunt down fake reviews. If we discover any, we remove them immediately and take appropriate action against the responsible parties.
Anyone can report suspicious reviews to our Customer Service team so our Fraud team can investigate.
Review Guidelines: Ensuring Quality and Relevance
We strive to publish every review we receive, both positive and negative, but we won’t display any that include:
- Impersonation (pretending to be someone else)
- Violation of our review guidelines
To maintain relevance, we may only accept reviews submitted within 3 months of your checkout date. We may also stop displaying reviews after 36 months or if the property changes ownership.
Accommodations have the option to respond to reviews, providing a chance for dialogue.
Navigating Reviews: Sorting and Filtering
When you see multiple reviews, the most recent ones appear at the top, along with considerations like language, text content, and anonymity. You can sort and filter reviews by date, score, traveler type, and more.
We may also display external review scores from other well-known travel websites, always clearly indicating their source.
Review Standards: Maintaining a Friendly Environment
Our guidelines aim to keep Booking.com content relevant and family-friendly without limiting the expression of strong opinions. These guidelines apply regardless of the sentiment of the comment.
Travel-related contributions are most valuable, providing detailed information to help others make informed choices. Please refrain from personal, political, ethical, or religious commentary, as well as promotional content.
Contributions should be suitable for a global audience. Avoid using profanity or offensive language in any form. Hate speech, discriminatory remarks, threats, sexually explicit content, violence, and promotion of illegal activity are strictly prohibited.
All content must be genuine and unique to the guest. Don’t post on behalf of others or offer incentives for reviews. Attempts to harm a competitor’s rating through negative reviews won’t be tolerated.
Respect the privacy of others. Booking.com will obscure email addresses, phone numbers, website addresses, social media accounts, and similar details.
Booking.com’s Role: Distributor, Not Publisher
The opinions expressed in reviews belong to Booking.com customers and properties, not Booking.com. We do not accept responsibility for reviews or responses, acting as a distributor, not a publisher.
Review Sorting: Providing Clarity
By default, reviews are sorted by date and other criteria to show the most relevant ones, including language, reviews with text, and non-anonymous reviews. You can choose from additional sorting options, like traveler type or score.
