Welcome to the world of Booking.com reviews! We want to make sure you get the most out of them, so let’s dive into how we make it all happen.
Calculating Your Overall Score
Every review you see on Booking.com is assigned a score between 1 and 10. To determine the overall score for a property, we add up all the review scores we’ve received and divide that total by the number of reviews. Pretty simple, right?
We’re always looking to improve, so we’re currently running a test in several countries – Malta, Iceland, Australia, Greece, Brazil and North Carolina – to see how a weighted review system works. In these locations, the more recent a review is, the greater its impact on the overall score calculation. This ensures that the most up-to-date feedback from guests is reflected in the score.
Subscores: Diving Deeper
Guests can also provide subscores for specific aspects of their stay, such as location, cleanliness, staff, comfort, facilities, value for money, and free Wi-Fi. This lets you get a more detailed picture of what to expect at a property.
It’s important to remember that guests submit their subscores and overall scores independently, so there’s no direct link between them.
Reviewing Your Stay
You can share your own experiences by submitting a review of any accommodation you’ve booked through our platform, whether you stayed there or just arrived but didn’t end up staying.
If you need to edit a review you’ve already submitted, just get in touch with our Customer Service team. We’re here to help!
Protecting Against Fake Reviews
We take review integrity very seriously. Our team, along with our automated systems, are always on the lookout for fake reviews. If we find any, we promptly remove them and take appropriate action against those responsible.
We encourage you to report any suspicious activity to our Customer Service team so our Fraud team can investigate.
Review Guidelines: Ensuring Quality and Respect
We aim to publish every review, good or bad, but some reviews simply won’t be displayed. These include reviews that:
- Impersonate someone else
- Violate our review guidelines
We also want to ensure that reviews are relevant. For this reason, we may only accept reviews submitted within 3 months of a guest’s checkout, and we may stop showing reviews after 36 months, or if there’s a change in ownership of the property.
Keeping Things Organized
Accommodations can reply to reviews, giving them a chance to address any concerns raised by guests.
When you see multiple reviews, the most recent ones appear at the top. We also take into account other factors, like the language of the review and whether it includes text or just a rating.
You can easily sort and filter reviews based on criteria like time of year, review score, and more.
Sometimes, you might see external review scores from other reputable travel websites. We’ll always make it clear when we’re displaying this type of information.
Review Guidelines: A Guide to Responsible Reviewing
We have a set of guidelines to ensure that our reviews are relevant, family-friendly, and respectful. They apply to all reviews, regardless of whether they’re positive or negative.
- Focus on travel: Keep your contributions travel-related. The most helpful reviews are detailed and offer insights to help others make informed decisions. Avoid personal, political, ethical, or religious commentary.
- Global Audience: Remember that your review will be seen by people from all over the world. Be mindful and respectful of diverse cultures and avoid using offensive language or profanity.
- Honesty and Originality: We want reviews to be authentic and unique to each guest. Don’t submit reviews on behalf of others or offer incentives for reviews.
Respecting Privacy
We’re committed to protecting the privacy of our users. When possible, we obscure email addresses, phone numbers, website addresses, and other personal details.
Disclaimer
Remember that the opinions expressed in reviews are those of Booking.com customers and property partners, not Booking.com itself. We do not take responsibility for the content of reviews or responses.
Sorting and Filtering
Reviews are sorted by date, and we use additional criteria to show the most relevant reviews, including your language preference, reviews with text, and non-anonymous reviews. You can also sort reviews by traveler type, score, and other criteria.
