Paris. The mere mention of the name conjures up images of charming cafes, cobblestone streets, and the iconic Eiffel Tower. But beyond the well-known landmarks, Paris offers a unique blend of history, art, and culture that truly captivates the senses. My latest trip to the City of Lights, a honeymoon journey with my husband Daniel, rekindled my love for this enchanting destination.
The City of Lights has a special way of making you feel at home, no matter the season. From the vibrant energy of summer to the cozy charm of winter, it’s a place that always inspires. This trip was no different. As we planned our honeymoon, we sought a place neither of us had explored. My preference for new experiences led me to Paris, a city I’d visited before but still yearned to rediscover. Paris is like a well-worn book; each time you revisit, you find a new detail, a fresh perspective, making it feel like a completely new adventure. This wasn’t meant to be a comprehensive guide to Paris, but rather a glimpse into our personal experience, highlighting some of our favorite spots.
Embracing the Unplanned
While I usually thrive on meticulously crafted itineraries, this trip was a departure from my typical travel style. I decided to embrace the unexpected and simply get lost in the Parisian charm. Paris, with its wealth of hidden gems and bustling streets, lends itself perfectly to exploration. I encourage you to leave your structured itinerary behind, allowing the city to guide you on a journey of discovery. The true magic of Paris lies in the small details. You’ll find yourself mesmerized by the morning glow on the streets, the vibrant blooms at flower markets, and the glimpses into history offered by the old courtyards. It’s about wandering with no particular destination in mind, allowing the city to reveal its treasures one serendipitous encounter at a time. Trust me, you won’t be disappointed!
A Chic and Cozy Home Base
For this trip, I was drawn to the 1st Arrondissement, hoping to experience a different side of Parisian life. It’s a fantastic location for a central base, offering easy access to the Latin Quarter and the Seine River. I initially planned to book a rental apartment, but the perfect match eluded me. Paris Perfect offers beautiful properties and their responsiveness is commendable, while Airbnb also provides a myriad of charming options. However, we ultimately opted for the Hotel Mansart, primarily for its beautiful terrace. A terrace feels quintessential Parisian, offering a delightful retreat for breakfast or evening wine, accompanied by the symphony of city sounds. The room itself was not extraordinary, but spacious by European standards, and the terrace made up for any lack of opulence. The Hotel Mansart offers a great location, friendly staff, and a clean, spacious elevator. It’s situated right around the corner from the Place Vendôme, The Ritz, and Coco Chanel’s apartment, providing a perfect balance of Parisian buzz without being overly loud or crowded.
Shopping Paradise
Paris is a shopper’s paradise, teeming with charming boutiques and hidden gems. While stumbling upon unexpected treasures is a delightful aspect of Parisian shopping, there are certain destinations you shouldn’t miss.
E. Dehillerin, a cookware haven established in the late 1800s, is a must-visit for cooking enthusiasts. It’s a no-frills haven for authentic copper pots and pans, pastry tips, and a dazzling array of cooking utensils. I finally succumbed to the allure of a beautiful copper saucepan and easily shipped it home. The helpful and knowledgeable staff are happy to answer any copper-related questions.
Astier de Villatte boasts two locations in Paris. The one near Rue Saint Honoré is close to our hotel, while the main store, showcasing breathtaking ceramics, is located near Jardin du Luxembourg. While their stunning ceramics are widely available, the shop offers unique pieces not found in other retail locations. It’s a delight to see their full collection in person. For fans of Astier de Villatte, their sister company, Carron, also offers a Parisian showroom by appointment.
Rue Jacob, on the left bank, is a haven for design shops. La Maison Ivre is a favorite for exquisite table linens, while Alix D. Reynis tempts shoppers with stunning ceramic pieces.
Marin Montagut is a whimsical wonderland filled with unique items you won’t find anywhere else. The charming interior adds to the delightful experience.
La Trésorerie, a true home goods store, is a haven for kitchen enthusiasts. This “general store” at 11 Rue du Château d’Eau offers much more than kitchen products, making it a paradise for home decor lovers.
Candle shops in Paris offer a sensory experience. Cire Trudon, the oldest candlemakers in the world, established in 1643, has a gorgeous showroom where you can indulge in the aromas of their exquisite candles. The original Diptyque store on boulevard Saint Germain often carries scents not found elsewhere, and I always love picking up a Parisian-scented candle as a souvenir. The beautiful Mad Et Len shop in Galerie Vivienne is another must-visit. And for fragrance lovers, L’officine Universelle Buly on Rue Bonaparte offers a unique fragrance experience in a stunning interior.
Parisian Flea Markets are an experience not to be missed. The famed Les Puces Saint-Ouen and Marché Aux Puces de Vanves are a treasure trove of unique finds. A Culinary Delight
Parisian cuisine is a tantalizing adventure for the palate. From cozy bistros to Michelin-starred restaurants, the city offers a culinary experience that will satisfy even the most discerning foodie.
Le Petit Chatelet is my absolute favorite restaurant in Paris. This family-owned establishment, situated near Shakespeare and Company in the Latin Quarter, offers simple, exquisite cuisine in a cozy ambiance. The fireplace, where they cook their delectable steaks, adds a touch of rustic charm.
Marché Saint-Honoré on the right bank is a great spot for a quick bite or drinks. While it features a modern glass office building in the middle, it transforms into a bustling local hangout in the evening. Siena, a pricier option, offers excellent Italian food, while other more affordable eateries surround the square.
Château Voltaire, a chic boutique hotel, boasts an incredible bar and restaurant, making it a worthy destination even if you’re not staying there.
