These are places that whisper tales of the past, offering a unique window into the city’s soul. We’ve included links to their websites so you can explore their menus and pricing, ensuring something for every budget and taste.
Parisian Classics: A Glimpse Into Time
Step into a bygone era at these iconic restaurants, each with a captivating history that will leave you reminiscing long after the last bite.
The Train Bleu: This restaurant is a Parisian icon. The interior is a breathtaking museum, adorned with golden embellishments and tributes to southern France. It’s a throwback to the days when guests dined here before catching the train to the French Riviera. You can almost feel the echoes of past travelers and the excitement of their journeys. We recently visited and were mesmerized by the beauty – you can see more of the restaurant in our photo gallery. [link to gallery].
Le Vieux Belleville: Tucked away in the vibrant Belleville neighborhood, this restaurant offers an authentic Parisian experience. Join in on a lively singalong with talented French musicians. We loved their Edith Piaf tribute night (Tuesdays), but they have different themes throughout the week. Expect traditional bistro fare at reasonable prices. The owner, a true local, loves to share stories of the neighborhood. If you speak French, be sure to ask him about Belleville’s history – it’s a real treat!
Le Dôme Montparnasse: This legendary restaurant still oozes charm. You won’t find the cheap eats Hemingway and Picasso enjoyed in its heyday, but the seafood is exquisite and the interior is simply stunning. Dive deeper into the history and see more photos of our visit [link to post].
From Train Tracks to Chic Brasseries: Unique Parisian Experiences
This next group of restaurants offers a unique blend of historical architecture, stunning interiors, and delicious cuisine.
Andia Paris: This unique restaurant is housed in a former train station on the petite ceinture railway line. Imagine sitting on what used to be the train tracks, with tables on the “platforms” and ticket booths transformed into chef’s kitchens. The light streaming in from the glass ceiling creates a magical atmosphere. The food was superb and the service exceptional – we loved it!
La Rotonde de la Muette: This elegant brasserie, housed in a beautiful building, exudes a quintessentially Parisian vibe. Walnut paneling and Versailles marble create an air of sophistication, complemented by the top-notch food on offer.
La Rotonde Stalingrad: This vibrant restaurant is a lively spot day and night. Its energy is contagious, thanks to the delicious food and the building’s fascinating history – it was once a toll gate to the city during the French Revolution! We recommend taking the stairs to the square windows at the top for a stunning view of the Bassin de la Villette.
Old-World Charm and Parisian Secrets
Step back in time with these restaurants that embody the spirit of old-world Paris.
Le Café du Commerce: This charming restaurant feels like a time capsule, with charming waiters zipping around the three levels. It’s a place steeped in local history, once a favorite hangout for car factory workers. No visit to the 15th arrondissement is complete without a meal here.
Bouillon Julien Paris: This old brasserie boasts an art nouveau interior that’s truly breathtaking. It’s a beautiful space that offers surprisingly affordable food. Go for the experience as much as the meal – you won’t be disappointed.
La Coupole: This art deco restaurant might not be the most exciting late at night, but its historical significance is undeniable. It was a hot spot for the Lost Generation, attracting legendary writers and artists like Ernest Hemingway and Gertrude Stein. If you’re a fan of history and chasing ghosts, this is your place!
Hidden Gem: Paris Under a Windmill
This last section is a must-visit for lovers of unique atmospheres and hidden gems.
Le Moulin de la Galette: This charming restaurant is unlike any other. Imagine dining under an ancient wooden windmill in Montmartre, dating back to 1622. The back garden was even immortalized in the famous Renoir painting “Bal au moulin de la Galette,” which is depicted on the restaurant’s facade.
Parisian Royalty: The Tour d’Argent
Step into the grandest of Parisian dining experiences.
Tour d’Argent: This iconic restaurant has catered to royalty and nobility since 1582. It moved to its current location, on the top floor with epic views of Notre Dame and the Seine, in 1936. After a 16-month renovation, it reopened in August 2023, looking spectacular.
Prepare for a memorable evening filled with breathtaking views, an exceptional wine menu, and a truly unique show. They’re famous for their canard au sang (pressed duck), which has been meticulously numbered since 1890 – over 1 million ducks served! We were lucky enough to dine here and had duck number 1,179,385.
