Paris is gearing up to host the 2024 Olympic Games, but the recent knife attack near the Eiffel Tower has cast a shadow over the event. The attack, which claimed the life of a tourist and injured others, was carried out by a suspected Islamic radical, adding another layer of complexity to the already challenging task of ensuring security.
A City on High Alert
Following the attack, concerns about security for the Games have escalated, both within France and globally. But law enforcement officials are determined to reassure the public.
“We are trying to make the invisible risk visible,” said Bernard Bobrowska, the inspector general of local police for Paris. “We are ready.”
Police officers have stepped up patrols, especially around the Eiffel Tower and the surrounding area where the attack occurred. Delinquency, including organized crime and terrorism, has seen a significant decline in recent months, with police conducting over 2,500 operations since the beginning of the year.
A Multi-Layered Security Plan
With a “zero delinquency” plan in place, police officers from various units, including district police, riot police, and plainclothes officers, work together to maintain a constant presence around Olympic sites. Officers from other European countries are also expected to contribute to security efforts during the Games.
Bobrowska emphasized that authorities are taking all risks into account, including terrorist threats. He described the security strategy as a “mesh of police of all types at all moments,” creating a deterrent for potential threats.
A Vigilant Approach
The Paris police are determined to prevent crime in all its forms, from small-time offenses like sidewalk betting games to high-end thefts. Criminals who prey on tourists are under close scrutiny.
Last year, for instance, police successfully dismantled a gang based in Naples, Italy that was specialized in stealing expensive watches. The gang used motorcycles and vans to operate, often targeting tourists for single, high-value watches.
Despite these efforts, crimes continue to occur. Police are remaining vigilant and taking proactive steps to ensure the safety of visitors and residents alike.
A Response to Trauma
The knife attack has undoubtedly raised concerns about security, but police maintain that they are prepared to handle any situation.
“We don’t reflect on things when in action … ask ourselves existential questions,” said Cyril Lacombe, police chief for Paris’s 7th district, where the Eiffel Tower is located. Lacombe, who was present at the Bataclan during the 2015 terrorist attacks, has seen firsthand the devastating consequences of violence. He emphasized that police are trained to focus on the task at hand and will address any emotional impacts afterwards.
While security remains a top priority, the Paris Olympics are set to be a celebration of sport and international unity. With a robust security plan in place, officials are confident that they can safeguard the event and ensure a safe and memorable experience for all.
