Paris Tap Water: Taste, Safety, and How to Get It

Wondering about the taste of Parisian tap water? If you’re used to filtered or bottled water, Parisian water might seem different. Personally, I haven’t noticed any unusual taste, but I’m accustomed to drinking filtered water at home, as the tap water in Phoenix doesn’t taste great. However, European water quality is considerably higher than in my hometown. You can always filter your own bottled water if you prefer to be extra cautious and stick with what you’re familiar with. Anything that makes you more likely to drink water and stay hydrated is a good thing, especially if you’re walking long distances while traveling, like I do!

The short Standpipe-style fountain is the most common source of free drinking water in Paris.

Do you need a water filter in Paris?

You don’t need a water filter when visiting Paris. Like many European cities, the tap water is potable and safe to drink. However, if you want to remove impurities or reduce chlorine levels, you can easily find a portable pocket-sized water filter. This is particularly helpful if you’re staying for a longer period and want to save money. It’s important to note that Parisian tap water is generally safe, but it may contain trace amounts of contaminants, so using a water filter can benefit your health.

How to Order Tap Water in a Parisian Restaurant

I hate paying for water at restaurants when I’m traveling – especially when they charge you 6 euros for a bottle! Luckily, in Paris, you can order tap water for free at any restaurant. They might not automatically bring you water, but simply ask the waiter for “une carafe d’eau, s’il vous plaît”, meaning “a carafe of water, please” in French. And voila! You’ll get a nice pitcher of free tap water to keep you hydrated while enjoying your meal or taking a break from sightseeing. It’s certainly more hydrating than a tiny cup of coffee! (My husband Chris is always surprised by how small the coffees are in Europe. He orders a ‘Café allongé’ to get a drink more like what you’d find in the US. I think it’s just the same coffee, but with more water added.)

How to Get Water in Paris

The easiest way to get tap water in Paris is through public fountains, known as “fontaines”. While you should always be cautious about drinking from a fountain that looks questionable (or where people may have washed their hands or filled up buckets), there are many places where you can find clean, safe tap water. Use your judgment! If a fountain appears gross or unclean, don’t drink from it! Bring your own reusable bottle and fill it up at a fountain. This way, you won’t have to worry about buying plastic bottles or other containers every time you need a drink. It’s a great way to save money in France and is, of course, more environmentally friendly. I like to travel light in Europe, so I usually don’t pack a reusable bottle because they take up a lot of space! But I will reuse a water bottle once I get to Europe rather than throw each one away. This is still better for the environment.

Sparkling Water Fountains

For a special treat, check out the “fizzy” water fountains in Paris. These fountains dispense sparkling water to those who crave something more than plain tap water. They’re located in parks and public squares throughout the city. They were introduced to encourage Parisians to drink more water! Paris was the first city in France to offer sparkling water fountains, and there are currently 17 fountains where you can refill your bottle with healthy sparkling water. The fizzy water is carbonated in the fountain itself, so it’s always fresh and bubbly. Personally, I don’t like fizzy water, but Chris loves it! (I even got him a carbonating machine for Christmas so he could make his own fizzy water.)
