Parisian Adventures: Olympic Spirit and Eiffel Tower Magic

It was June 23rd, the end of our month-long French escapade, and we were about to switch hotels in Paris. But this wasn’t just any ordinary day. It was the grand opening of Paris’ two-day Olympic Day celebration! Our taxi was ready to take us from the right bank to the left, right through the heart of the festivities.

A City Transformed: Olympic Day Takes Over Paris

On June 23rd and 24th, Paris was abuzz with energy, showcasing its best to win hearts and votes to become the host city for the 2024 Olympic and Paralympic Games. The city had transformed into a massive sports extravaganza, with activities scattered throughout the central districts.

From the high diving platform gracefully perched on Pont Alexandre III to the climbing wall rising up the Pavillon de l’Arsenal, the city pulsed with athletic spirit. Cycling enthusiasts raced around Place de la Concorde, while sports fields sprouted on the lawns of Les Invalides. The Seine River, a shimmering ribbon through the city, became a floating running track between Pont Alexandre III and Pont des Invalides. It was a truly breathtaking spectacle.

Traffic Troubles and Unexpected Perks

This temporary sports arena, however, posed a challenge for our taxi driver. Our usual route was blocked, adding to the already congested Parisian streets. Many roads and bridges were closed to traffic, creating a pedestrian paradise. While the inconvenience was real, I couldn’t help but feel privileged to witness Paris transformed into a giant sports park. Later that day, I joined the cheerful crowd gathered around Pont Alexandre III, reveling in the infectious energy of the event. Sport, much like music, has this incredible power to unite people. The atmosphere was electric!

Parisian Chaos, a Taxi Ride, and a Story from the Past

It wouldn’t be a Parisian adventure without a dose of chaos. The usual hum of sirens added to the lively soundtrack of the day. While the traffic was a bit of a hurdle, I found myself enjoying the slow crawl. You see, our taxi had a see-through roof! I spent the time capturing the Parisian streets from this unique vantage point, with the iconic Parisien Taxi sign peeking into every frame.

The gridlock also sparked a memory from a previous Parisian adventure. I recalled my four-hour taxi journey from Charles de Gaulle Airport to Paris back in 2012, a journey that was brought to a standstill by a highway accident. That day, I felt the sting of time slipping away, and I was determined not to let a traffic jam cut short my time in the City of Lights this time around.

Les Jardins d’Eiffel: A Home Away From Home

After navigating the chaotic city streets, our taxi driver managed to get us close to our hotel. The traffic was so dense that getting onto the one-way street leading to our hotel seemed impossible. He suggested we get out and walk a short distance. With over 70 kilos of luggage in tow, we bid farewell to the taxi and ventured on foot.

I quickly located Les Jardins d’Eiffel on Rue Amélie, confirming our driver’s directions. Our porter, efficient and friendly, easily lifted Kent’s bulky canvas bag, making a positive first impression of the hotel. After a smooth check-in, we ascended to our room on the fifth floor, our “home away from home” for the next five nights.

Eiffel Tower Views and Parisian Charm

We had requested a room with a view of the Eiffel Tower, and the hotel had delivered! The moment I stepped into our room, I was swept away by the breathtaking view of this iconic Parisian landmark. This was a privilege double room, and despite its small size (approximately 15 square metres), the view outweighed any limitations. The simple interior and dated bathroom were easily forgotten in the presence of this magnificent vista.

Our room had everything we needed for our final days in France: a safe, slippers, a kettle, a hairdryer, a mini-bar, a TV, clean towels, daily housekeeping, and a bathtub, which I always appreciate. But it was the view, oh the view, that made it truly unforgettable!

Bistrot Chez France: A Delightful Parisian Dinner

Bistrot Chez France, just across from Les Jardins d’Eiffel, was a lively spot, bustling with people. Thanks to the warm and energetic Madame France, the owner, we secured a table for two.

We decided to skip the starter, saving it for another time, and dived straight into the main course. I chose duck breast with orange sauce, while Kent opted for lamb of Sisteron with rosemary sauce. My duck was perfectly cooked, and the orange sauce was a delight, with a beautiful balance of sweetness and zest. Kent, meanwhile, was surprised by the unique taste of the French lamb, a far cry from the lamb he was used to in Australia.

For dessert, we shared a delicious pistachio crème brûlée, its caramelized sugar topping a creamy, dreamy custard. We paired it with a recommended rosé, a perfect accompaniment to our meal.

The atmosphere was cozy and inviting, and Madame France’s warm personality made us feel right at home.

The Eiffel Tower Shimmers, a Magical Sight

The Eiffel Tower is known for its dazzling nighttime display, shimmering every hour for five minutes. We had already witnessed this spectacle once before, and we were eager to experience it again.

After dinner at Bistrot Chez France, we strolled along the streets, enjoying the Parisian summer night. Suddenly, we turned a corner, and there it was: the Eiffel Tower, in all its shimmering glory. It’s a sight that never fails to amaze, and it’s so much more magical in person than on any video.

Our Parisian adventure wouldn’t have been complete without this view from our room, a lasting memory of our time in the City of Lights.
