Parisian Style: Secrets from a Parisian Fashion Icon

It’s not about following the latest trends, it’s about creating your own unique style. And simplicity, according to Parisian fashion icon Jeanne Damas, is the key. She believes in a capsule wardrobe of essential pieces that can be mixed and matched for any occasion.

Think timeless staples:

  • The wrap dress: a versatile piece that transitions seamlessly from day to night.
  • High-waisted jeans: a flattering and essential foundation for any outfit.
  • A men’s style jacket: adding a touch of effortless cool.
  • Slip dresses: perfect for summer evenings.
  • A classic trench coat: an elegant and practical choice for any weather.
  • Ankle boots: a comfortable and stylish footwear option.

“I wear, more or less, the same things as a kind of uniform every day,” Jeanne explains. “A wrap dress, like our iconic Gabin dress, is something you can wear on any occasion – it’s always good to have a multifunctional dress like this. Jeans are an important staple in my wardrobe, so high-waisted jeans are essential. A men’s style jacket (like the Jacques by Rouje), slip dresses (particularly for summer), a trench coat (I have a beautiful Burberry vintage one) and ankle boots are all essential. When I buy sweaters, I get a size bigger as I prefer how the fabric falls when you tuck it inside your trousers.”

Effortlessly Chic Evening Looks

Don’t feel the need to completely transform your look for evening. Instead, focus on subtle tweaks that elevate your daytime attire. Jeanne often pairs high-waisted jeans with a chic top and mules for an effortlessly polished evening look.

“I don’t like to be too dressy in the evening, so I often wear a pair of high-waisted jeans with a nice top and some mules – I like how mules can upscale even a very simple outfit,” Jeanne explains. “And I love a zero make-up look, with just a big red lip, applied with the fingers for a softly blurry effect.”

Packing for a Parisian Adventure: Essential Items for Your Trip

A trip to Paris is an opportunity to embrace the city’s timeless style.

Here are 8 essential items to pack for your Parisian adventure:

1. The Essential Blazer: A Touch of Parisian Chic

A well-tailored blazer is a must-have for every traveler. It instantly elevates any casual outfit, adding a touch of Parisian elegance. Look for a single-breasted style that falls to the top of your thumb. Classic black is a versatile choice, but velvet, satin, or even leather can also be considered for a touch of luxury.

2. French Women Know Their Denim: Classic Straight-Leg Jeans

Classic straight-leg jeans are a staple in any Parisian wardrobe. Choose classic denim blue and pair them with smart blazers, casual knits, flats, or heels. Avoid faded or distressed denim—keep it clean and timeless.

3. Comfortable Footwear: Classic and Chic

French women are known for their versatile footwear that can take them from day to night. Opt for classic and comfortable shoes, such as comfortable yet formal tan loafers or ballet flats, ensuring your feet are comfortable for exploring the city.

4. The Trench Coat: A Parisian Icon

A classic trench coat is a true Parisian staple, perfect for any weather condition. Look for a classic trench with neutral tones and timeless details, whether you prefer a fitted or oversized style.

5. The Right Handbag: Chic and Practical

A classic shoulder bag is ideal for a Parisian adventure. It’s big enough to carry essentials, yet not too cumbersome. Look for sleek fabrics like suede and consider tying a scarf around the handle for a touch of luxury.

6. Statement Jewelry: Add a Touch of Glamour

Instead of layering on jewelry, opt for one simple statement piece. Sparking earrings, a bold necklace, or a statement brooch can add instant glamour. Don’t underestimate the power of a scarf. It can be slung around your neck, tied in a loose ponytail, or threaded through your bag strap for a chic and colorful touch.

7. The Classic Knit: Navy or Breton Stripes

A classic knit is a timeless wardrobe essential. Navy is a softer alternative to black and offers a touch of Riviera charm. Breton stripes are a true ode to French style. Look for boxy styles or a size larger for a casual look and tuck it into your high-waist jeans for the ultimate Parisian vibe.

8. Versatile Dresses: Dress Up or Dress Down

Versatile dresses that can be dressed up or dressed down are essential for your Parisian wardrobe. Pair them with trainers during the day for a casual look and swap for chic mules and glitzy jewelry for a slinkier evening ensemble.

Embrace Parisian style with these essential pieces and create your own effortless and chic look.
