Paris is a beautiful city, but like any major tourist destination, it can attract thieves. Pickpockets are a common problem, especially in areas crowded with tourists. This can be upsetting, but don’t let it ruin your trip! By following a few simple tips, you can greatly reduce your risk of becoming a victim.
Protecting Your Valuables
The first step to staying safe is to minimize what you carry. Keep your wallet light, carrying only essential items: a single credit or ATM card, one form of ID, and a small amount of cash – around €40-50. A hairbrush is easily replaceable, but losing your passport or social security card can be a real headache! It’s a good idea to make copies of your important documents, including the front and back of your cards. That way, if you need to cancel them or replace your passport, you’ll have all the necessary information.
Ladies, opt for purses that zip securely, keeping them close to your body under your arm and slightly in front. If you carry a backpack-style purse, wear it so it’s in front of you as well. Gentlemen, keep your wallet in your front pocket, secured with a rubber band. This makes it much harder for someone to snatch it without you noticing.
Avoiding Common Pickpocket Tactics
Pickpockets often target tourists in popular areas, especially around major attractions like the Eiffel Tower, Notre Dame, and the Champs-Elysées. They are also known to operate near museums, monuments, restaurants, hotels, beaches, trains, train stations, airports, subways, and even vehicles with out-of-state license plates.
Pickpockets often work in groups, which can include young girls and boys of different races. They frequently operate in busy areas, using various tactics to distract and steal from their victims.
On the metro, be on the lookout for the “crush and grab” technique. This involves a group of people pushing and shoving to get on or off the train. While they’re crowding you, they’re also picking your pockets. Another trick is to snatch a purse from someone sitting by the door and then quickly exiting as the doors close. To avoid falling victim to this, try to find a seat away from the doors. If you can’t sit, stand against the side of the train. Keep your pockets and purses as inaccessible as possible.
On the street, pickpockets often use the distraction technique. Two or more people may approach you asking for directions, trying to sell you something, or simply crowding you. While your attention is focused on one person, another is picking your pocket. They may also try to spill water or ice cream on you. Someone might even “help” you clean up, only to have another person steal from you while you’re distracted.
Using ATMs Safely
Most ATMs in Paris are safe, but it’s crucial to use caution. Always choose an ATM that’s well-lit and located at a reputable bank. Avoid those in dark or deserted alleys. If the ATM swallows your card and doesn’t return it, go inside the bank immediately. This is not normal and could indicate that the machine has been tampered with. While using the ATM, avoid talking to anyone. Focus on getting your money and moving on. Recent tactics include people asking for directions while someone is using the ATM. This distraction allows the thieves to steal pin numbers and card information. To protect yourself, cover the pin pad with your hand when entering your code. If an ATM looks damaged or suspicious, don’t use it!
The Embassy Can Help
If you do become a victim of theft, it’s important to file a report with the local police station (commissariat) before leaving France. Don’t chase after the thief, especially if you suspect they’re part of a group. Your wallet was likely passed to someone else before you even realized it was gone. Trying to apprehend a thief could get you into serious trouble.
If you’ve lost important items like credit cards or airline tickets, the Consular Section of the Embassy can provide information on how to replace them. If you’ve lost all your money, they can help you find the fastest way to receive funds from family or friends. If your passport is stolen, they can issue a replacement.
By following these safety tips and being aware of your surroundings, you can enjoy your trip to Paris with peace of mind!
