Planning Your Eiffel Tower Visit: Essential Tips for a Safe and Enjoyable Experience

Want to make the most of your Eiffel Tower visit? This guide is packed with essential tips and instructions to ensure your safety and help you enjoy every minute of your experience. It’s based on the official visit regulations, which you can find here.

Read on to learn about key safety measures, understand prohibited items, and discover how to navigate the tower smoothly.

Navigating Security Measures and Prohibited Items

The Eiffel Tower, like all public facilities in France, has a strict security system. This is reinforced by the national “Vigipirate” plan, which is currently at the “increased security – risk of attack” level. Everyone, whether you pre-purchased tickets or plan to buy them on-site, must pass through two security checkpoints: one at the entrance to the site and another before entering the pillar to access the elevators or stairs.

Be prepared to say goodbye to certain items! For safety reasons, several objects are prohibited inside the Eiffel Tower. This includes “any object that poses a risk to the safety of people, the facilities or the monument.” Make sure to thoroughly check your bags before entering the tower, as even seemingly harmless items like a Swiss army knife are considered weapons and will not be permitted. Remember, our security teams cannot make exceptions or store restricted items for you.

Luggage, Strollers, and Other Transport

Don’t let your luggage become a stumbling block to your Eiffel Tower adventure! While we understand you might want to visit the tower on the day of your departure, for safety and to maintain a smooth flow of visitors, large luggage is not allowed inside the tower. There are no luggage lockers, storage, or cloakrooms available at or near the Eiffel Tower. A luggage sizer is available at the security checkpoints to help you determine if your luggage is within the permissible size. If your luggage exceeds the size limit, it will not be allowed. We recommend storing your luggage at a train station or hotel before heading to the Eiffel Tower.

Family fun at the Eiffel Tower is encouraged! Children of all ages are welcome to marvel at this iconic landmark. While strollers for little ones are permitted, please note that only folding strollers are allowed to prevent bulky objects from obstructing pathways. Scooters, bicycles, and roller skates are not allowed inside the tower.

Protecting Yourself and Others

Always keep your belongings safe! It may seem obvious, but never leave your bags or strollers unattended. In today’s heightened security environment, an abandoned bag can trigger a major response, including securing the perimeter, evacuating floors, or calling in bomb disposal services. Even a moment of forgetfulness can disrupt the experience for everyone.

Lost something? Don’t panic! If you’re still at the tower and know the location of your lost item, report it to a member of the reception team or the Information desk in the west pillar on the esplanade. If you realize you’ve lost something after your visit, access our “Lost Property” service online.

Safety First: Photography and Fear of Heights

Those stunning Paris views from the Eiffel Tower might tempt you to snap a photo over the railings or through the gates. But please understand that this is extremely dangerous and strictly forbidden! Your phone or camera could easily slip from your hand or detach from a selfie stick, endangering anyone below. Parents, please emphasize this important safety rule to your children and teenagers.

If you have a fear of heights, consider carefully before attempting to reach the top of the Eiffel Tower. While the climb from the second floor offers an incredible experience, it may be unpleasant for those with acrophobia. If this is a concern, purchase tickets with access to the second floor, which includes the first and second floors, providing equally breathtaking views.
