The City of Lights, My Seasons

Paris has always held a special place in my heart. It’s a city of romance, history, and culture, instantly recognizable by its iconic landmarks and charming streets. But beyond the stereotypical images of bistro tables and rows of croissants, there’s a deeper story to be told.

A City of Rhythms

John Baxter, in his book “A Year in Paris,” reveals the hidden rhythm of Parisian life. Parisians live according to the changing seasons, adapting to the city’s evolving character. This natural rhythm influences everything from daily routines to personal well-being. Embrace this Parisian mindset, and you’ll find yourself healthier and happier.

This means that there’s no bad time to visit Paris. Each season offers its own unique beauty, whether it’s the blooming cherry blossoms in spring, the sunsets on the Seine in summer, the colorful fall foliage in autumn, or the reflective city streets after a winter rain. Paris is a city that comes alive with each passing season.

Spring: A Time of Dreams

My first trip to Paris happened when I was just sixteen. I was completely obsessed with French culture, inspired by Cynthia Baxter’s novel “A Summer in Paris.” The book tells the story of four friends who travel to Paris for a school trip, and I was particularly drawn to one character, Nina, who embodies the spirit of Paris. She had dark hair, like me, and her life revolved around French cafes, croissants, and her dreams of becoming a writer.

When my own French teacher announced a trip to Paris, my parents, understanding my passion, didn’t hesitate to say yes. It was the opportunity of a lifetime, a chance to live out my dreams. I studied French, borrowed travel books, and listened to French radio, eager to immerse myself in the city’s language and culture.

Finally, the day arrived, and I was standing in Paris, ready for my first real adventure. The city was everything I imagined and more. I was completely enchanted, feeling like I was in a dream. My teenage self even considered losing my passport to stay in Paris forever! (Thankfully, I didn’t go through with it.)

This springtime in Paris was filled with vibrant colors, representing the innocence and excitement of youth. It was a season of dreams, a time for discovery and new beginnings. It was perfect, but like all good things, it had to end.

Summer: A Time of Invincibility

I thought that my first trip to Paris would be my only one. But life has a way of surprising you, and Paris wasn’t finished with me yet.

My second trip to Paris happened during my senior year of high school, a time of change and transition. I was leaving childhood behind and stepping into adulthood, with new responsibilities and choices to make. It was during this whirlwind that Paris called me back, this time to witness World Youth Day.

My friends and I spent months fundraising for the trip, working hard to make our dreams come true. It was a hot August when we finally arrived in Paris, a city brimming with energy and excitement. It didn’t matter that we were exhausted from our long journey and the sweltering heat. We were young and idealistic, and the city’s vibrancy fueled our spirit.

We were invincible, with a shared purpose and a sense of belonging. We shared candlelight vigils and made new friends from all over the world, creating memories that would last a lifetime.

And then, just as quickly as it had begun, the trip came to an end. The tragic death of Princess Diana in a tunnel under the Pont de l’Alma served as a stark reminder of life’s fragility. I left for university, carrying with me the memories and lessons of that summer.

Autumn: A Time of Change

My third trip to Paris happened years later, when I was a young mother. I was married, working, raising a son, and I thought that Paris had become a distant memory. But the city’s magic never truly left me.

Every few years, I felt the itch to return to Paris. I convinced my husband, who was not as enthusiastic about French culture as I was, to join me on this journey. I thought that we could relive some of the magic of my teenage trips, but it wasn’t quite the same.

I had changed. I was no longer the carefree teenager I once was. I was a mother, overwhelmed with responsibilities, and struggling with the idea of leaving my son behind. The flight itself triggered a panic attack, making me question the entire trip.

But my husband insisted on going through with it. We managed to overcome my fears and enjoy a different kind of Parisian experience. We skipped the tourist attractions and explored the city’s hidden corners, seeking out the everyday life of Parisians.

We rode a Vespa through the traffic near the Arc de Triomphe, visited the outdoor flea market in Montreuil, and enjoyed a picnic in the park with local families. It was a different kind of magic, a more mature and nuanced appreciation of the city.

Winter: A Time of Reflection

I don’t know if I’ll ever return to Paris again. If I do, I doubt that the city will recognize me.

I’m no longer the young girl with dark hair who was inspired by Nina from the book. Time has passed, and I’ve changed in countless ways. I have gained wisdom and confidence but also learned to prioritize differently.

I’ve seen loss and experienced life’s ups and downs, and I understand now that life is short. My dreams and goals have evolved, and I appreciate the beauty in the simpler things.

My final season in Paris taught me that sometimes the most meaningful journeys are the ones we take within ourselves. The city has witnessed my growth and transformation, and I’ve carried its lessons with me throughout my life.

My novel, Provenance Unknown, is a testament to the power of Paris to inspire and shape our stories. It’s a story of adventure, discovery, and self-discovery, set against the backdrop of this extraordinary city.

And so, I bid farewell to Paris, at least for now. But the city’s magic will always remain in my heart. I know that Paris will always be there, waiting for me, whenever I’m ready to return to its embrace.

Watch for Sonia’s debut novel, Provenance Unknown, in Spring 2023 published by Sands Press.
