The Eiffel Tower: Growing Older and Taller

The Eiffel Tower is a symbol of Paris, France, and a popular tourist attraction. It is known for its intricate design, elegant silhouette, and captivating history. But did you know this iconic landmark has a secret? It’s not just getting older, but also growing taller!

A New Chapter in History

On March 31, 2022, the Eiffel Tower celebrated its 133rd birthday. While this iconic structure is definitely getting older, it is also reaching new heights!

On March 15, 2022, the Eiffel Tower underwent a transformation. A helicopter carefully placed a new digital radio antenna atop the existing ones, adding a remarkable 6 meters to its height. This brings the Eiffel Tower to a towering 330 meters, making it even more impressive.

Towering Technology

This addition wasn’t just for show! The new antenna is crucial for improving digital radio coverage in Paris and the surrounding areas. With this new technology, TDF can broadcast nearly 30 Digital Terrestrial Television (DTT) channels and 32 Digital Audio Broadcasting (DAB+) radio stations to 12 million people within a radius of nearly 80 kilometers. That’s a lot of people enjoying clearer radio signals!

DAB+ technology is especially exciting because it allows 13 radio stations to be broadcast on the same frequency. This is a significant improvement over the traditional Frequency Modulation (FM) band, where each station needs its own frequency. The result is a stronger signal and higher sound quality for listeners.

Growing Up with the Times

The Eiffel Tower’s history is filled with fascinating transformations. It started as a 300-meter structure built for the 1889 World Fair in Paris. It wasn’t initially called the “Iron Lady”, and its architect, Gustave Eiffel, wasn’t as famous as he is today.

In 1889, a flagpole was added, making it 312 meters tall. Over the years, the Eiffel Tower has been adorned with television antennas, meteorology equipment, and even a few renovations after a fire in 1956. The addition of broadcasting towers in 1957 brought it to 320.75 meters. Then, in 2020, a new Ultra High Frequency (UHF) antenna pushed its height to 324 meters.

A Symbol of Resilience

The Eiffel Tower has seen it all, from its initial construction to the world wars and the recent pandemic. It even faced its longest period out of action during the first lockdown in 2020, a challenging time for the tourism industry.

Despite the challenges, the Eiffel Tower bounced back with enhanced hygiene measures and a one-way traffic system to ensure the safety of its visitors.
