The Observatory’s mission is clear: to be a valuable tool for decision-making. It enables the Restos du Cœur to effectively address the needs of their beneficiaries, analyze the changing demographics of their clientele, and identify emerging forms of poverty. At the heart of the Observatory’s work is the direct voice of the beneficiaries themselves. Through individual and group interviews, as well as questionnaires, their experiences and insights are collected and analyzed. This ensures that the Restos du Cœur remain responsive to the real challenges faced by those they serve.
The Observatory operates under the guidance of the organization’s Board of Directors, acting as a consultative body that submits recommendations to the National Office. It is structured around three permanent colleges, with one specifically dedicated to representing the departmental associations, ensuring that the Restos du Cœur’s core principles are upheld.

The Observatory thrives on a philosophy of collaboration. Over the years, it has forged valuable partnerships with institutions like Université Paris Descartes, I.S.I.T., and Sciences Po Paris. - November 2023: An extensive study on the individuals benefiting from food assistance. This analysis encompassed all households receiving aid and all individuals within those households, offering a comprehensive understanding of the demographic makeup of those in need.
- July 2023: An exploration of the social impact of food assistance provided by the Restos du Cœur. This study delved into the beneficiaries’ perspectives on the assistance they receive, specifically the value of its free nature, and how they utilize this assistance, including food provision, support services, and social connections. It also investigated the extent to which food assistance contributes to an improvement in their economic, social, and overall well-being. Notably, this study quantified the return on investment for public funds allocated to the Restos du Cœur, demonstrating the significant multiplier effect of their work. For every 1 euro invested, 4 euros are deployed, showcasing the exceptional impact of their activities. This research highlights the crucial role the Restos du Cœur plays in alleviating poverty and providing vital support to those in need.
- January/July 2022: A study focusing on the individuals who receive assistance and the volunteers who dedicate their time to the Restos du Cœur. It aimed to understand the motivations of beneficiaries who choose to become volunteers, exploring the reasons behind their transition. The study also sought to identify the positive effects of involving beneficiaries as volunteers.
- July 2021/January 2022: An initiative to gather the needs and expectations of beneficiaries at Restos du Cœur locations. This survey collected insights on various aspects of their experience, including the initial welcome, support services beyond food assistance, and the quality of food aid provided.
- June/September 2020: A rapid study examining the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on the individuals supported by the Restos du Cœur. This study captured the multifaceted challenges faced by beneficiaries during the health crisis, particularly during the initial lockdown period (March-May 2020).
