(Get Ready to Feel Amazing!)
Paris is a dream destination for many, but the journey can be a bit of a hurdle. Long flights, especially if you’re not a seasoned traveler, can leave you feeling drained. But don’t let jet lag ruin your Parisian adventure!
This guide is packed with tips and tricks to help you arrive in Paris feeling refreshed and ready to explore the City of Lights. Whether you’re a seasoned traveler or a first-timer, these strategies will help you beat jet lag and make the most of your trip.
Pre-Flight Prep: Setting Yourself Up for Success
(Before you even step on the plane!)
Before your flight takes off, there are a few things you can do to give yourself a head start on avoiding jet lag.
Think of this as your jet lag-fighting arsenal!
The day of your flight, wake up early, even if it’s as early as 5 am. It might feel a little rough at first, but it will help you feel tired by the time you board the plane. It’s all about training your body for the new time zone!
While it’s best to avoid caffeine, a small amount early in the morning can help jumpstart your day. But remember, it’s all about moderation.
To keep your body energized and prevent stiffness from sitting for long periods, try a workout or a brisk walk before you leave for the airport. It will also help you relax on the flight!
(Fueling for Flight)
Eating clean foods the day of your flight is crucial. This means loading up on nutritious options that will keep your energy levels stable and prevent stomach upset. Packing your own dinner for the flight ensures you have a healthy and tasty meal onboard.
Onboard Strategies: Staying Healthy & Hydrated
(It’s all about taking care of yourself during the flight!)
Airplanes are notorious for being germ havens. Before settling into your seat, use hand wipes to sanitize everything, including the touch screen monitor, tray tables, and any other surfaces you might touch.
Don’t forget to sanitize your hands after using the restroom! I prefer spray sanitizers as they’re easier to use in the tight space.
(The Key to Conquering Jet Lag: Hydration!)
Hydration is essential for beating jet lag. Start drinking plenty of water with electrolytes several days before your flight and continue throughout your journey. The rule of thumb on the plane is to drink eight ounces of water per hour, so you’ll need at least 72 ounces for a nine-hour flight.
Don’t be afraid to pack large water bottles with electrolytes! You’ll need enough for the flight, the car ride, and your apartment.
While some people prefer a glass of wine to help them sleep on the plane, I’ve switched to melatonin. If you’re not used to taking melatonin, it’s best to test it out a few times before your flight to see how it affects you.
Landing in Paris: The Final Touches
(Putting your jet lag-fighting plan into action!)
When the plane lands, it’s time to put your hydration plan into overdrive! Chug as much water as you can handle. It’s the ultimate jet lag cure. Adding electrolyte tablets to your water can also help, especially if you’re prone to feeling dehydrated.
(Taking Care of Your Skin)
Taking care of your skin can help you feel your best after a long flight. The air on planes can be very drying, so it’s important to combat those effects.
Keep a TSA-approved travel pouch filled with your skincare essentials.
Remove any makeup you might have worn on the flight with wipes and apply a refreshing face mist. Follow with a hydrating mask, eye cream, and lip mask. Before landing, spritz your face with water again and apply a hydrating cream and lip balm.
(Combatting Swelling)
Compression socks are a lifesaver for preventing swelling on long flights. They’re non-negotiable for me!
If you forget them, don’t worry, you can easily find them at most pharmacies in Paris.
Rest and Relaxation: Sleep Well, Feel Good
(Resting up for your Parisian adventures!)
As tempting as it is to catch a movie, prioritize sleep on the flight. Even if you can only get a few hours of shut-eye, it’s better than nothing.
Keep a travel pillow and a neck pillow in your carry-on for added comfort.
Changing into comfortable pajamas or loungewear can also help signal to your body that it’s time to rest.
(The Importance of Sleep Aids)
Some people prefer sleeping pills, but melatonin works great for me. If you’re trying a sleep aid for the first time, try it out at home a few times before your flight.
The Parisian Awakening: Starting Your Day Right
(Feeling refreshed and ready to explore!)
Skip breakfast on the plane and opt for a Vitamin C tablet with water instead.
This little boost will help your immune system and give you some extra energy.
(Embracing the Parisian Lifestyle)
While many people recommend eating something for breakfast on the plane to help adjust to the new time zone, I prefer to wait and enjoy a delicious croissant or a nice meal when I arrive in Paris.
My dad taught me about the importance of blue light in the morning for regulating your circadian rhythm.
As soon as you arrive in Paris, roll down your window in the taxi and soak up the sunlight and fresh air.
A hot shower will wash away the plane germs and help you feel refreshed. It’s a great way to wake up and get ready for the day.
Embrace the City: A Parisian Adventure Awaits
(Time to explore the City of Lights!)
Resist the urge to take a nap when you first arrive. Instead, go outside and explore the city! Walking is a great way to see the sights and get some fresh air.
Stop for coffee and snacks along the way, and enjoy a glass of wine at lunchtime (it is Paris, after all!), but try to limit it to one to avoid feeling tired later.
Avoid spending too much time in museums or other indoor attractions on your arrival day. Instead, opt for a long walk, a boat tour, or an open-air bus tour to familiarize yourself with the city and soak up the Parisian atmosphere.
(Making Exceptions for Sleep)
If you didn’t get any sleep on the plane, you can allow yourself a two to three-hour nap. Just be sure to set an alarm so you don’t sleep too late!
Stay Up Late
Try to stay awake until at least 10 pm on the day you arrive. This will help you adjust to the new time zone. Make a dinner reservation for around 7:30 pm to keep you up and engaged.
Digital Detox: Recharge and Rejuvenate
(Unplugging for a better night’s sleep!)
It’s tempting to reach for your phone in the middle of the night, but resist the urge! This can disrupt your sleep and make it difficult to fall back asleep. Charge your phone away from your bed to avoid temptation.
(Making the Most of Your Morning)
Schedule an activity for the morning after you arrive, such as museum tickets or a tour. This will give you a reason to wake up early and start your day with purpose.
Jet Lag Conquered!
By following these tips, you’ll arrive in Paris feeling refreshed and ready to explore the City of Lights.
Remember, beating jet lag is all about preparation, hydration, rest, and embracing the Parisian lifestyle.
Now, go out there and have an amazing time!
