Walkable Paris: A Guide to the 7th Arrondissement

Paris, unlike London or Rome, is a city that’s remarkably walkable. Its neighborhoods, known as “arrondissements,” are organized in a spiral pattern, making it relatively easy to navigate. For me, a long-time resident, exploring these districts is a favorite pastime, discovering their unique personalities and hidden treasures.

After exploring the first six arrondissements, we now journey to the 7th, a place known for its most iconic landmark, the Eiffel Tower. You might be surprised to learn that this area, far from the city center, was once a quiet residential neighborhood.

A Prestigious Neighborhood

Even today, the 7th remains a prestigious residential zone, attracting affluent Parisians and foreign diplomats. Home to the National Assembly and numerous embassies, it boasts beautiful mansions, a reminder of its aristocratic past. Since the 17th century, the French elite have called this area home, making it one of the most sought-after addresses in all of France.

The 7th arrondissement sprawls along the Seine River from the Champ de Mars to the Fine Arts school. It’s bordered by the Avenue de Suffren to the west, the rue des Saints-Pères and rue de Sèvres to the east, and the Esplanade Jacques Chaban-Delmas to the south, offering stunning views of the Invalides, a historical complex housing the Hôtel des Invalides and Napoleon’s tomb.

Exploring the 7th’s Landmarks

In addition to the Eiffel Tower, the 7th arrondissement is home to many other notable landmarks: the Musée d’Orsay, showcasing Impressionist and Post-Impressionist art; the Champ de Mars, a vast park with a breathtaking view of the Eiffel Tower; and the Bon Marché, a luxurious department store.

The 7th has a refined and touristy vibe, but it’s full of charming hidden gems. You’ll find elegant shops, art galleries, and a variety of restaurants, cafes, and bars, each with its own distinct character.

My Perfect Day in the 7th

Start your day with a delicious breakfast at one of the 7th’s many outstanding bakeries. Tâpisserie and Liberté are excellent choices, known for their croissants and other pastries, and both offer seating for a relaxing morning break. If the weather permits, grab your pastry and a cup of coffee from Terres de Café and head to the Champ de Mars, enjoying the vibrant atmosphere and stunning views of the Eiffel Tower.

For a quieter breakfast experience, consider PariSeven Boulangerie, a charming bakery with a pink storefront. Their traditional baguettes are truly exceptional, and enjoying one with the Eiffel Tower in the background is a delightful experience.

A Culinary Adventure

After breakfast, explore the Musée du Quai Branly – Jacques Chirac, a fascinating museum showcasing indigenous art and cultures from around the world. Their temporary exhibitions are always worth checking out.

Lunchtime is a special occasion in the 7th. For a truly memorable dining experience, ascend to the Eiffel Tower and treat yourself to a meal at the Jules Verne, a two-Michelin-starred restaurant. This luxurious restaurant offers breathtaking panoramic views and exceptional cuisine.

If you’re looking for a more affordable option, stroll along rue Cler, a bustling market street, and gather ingredients for a picnic. The cheese at Marie-Anne Cantin is exquisite, and the bread from Liberté is perfect for a delightful lunch enjoyed on the Esplanade des Invalides, with the golden dome of the Hôtel des Invalides as your backdrop.

For a classic bistro experience, try a charming and affordable bistro in the neighborhood. They often have a welcoming atmosphere, tasty cuisine, and are open throughout the day. Whether you’re looking for a quick lunch or a more leisurely meal, you’re sure to find something to suit your taste.

The 7th arrondissement offers a perfect blend of history, culture, and luxury. Whether you’re a seasoned Parisian or a first-time visitor, this captivating district is sure to leave a lasting impression. With its stunning landmarks, vibrant atmosphere, and delicious culinary offerings, the 7th is a must-visit destination for anyone exploring the City of Lights.
